in a study published in the journal Nature Communications researchers have discovered two responsible for the differentiation of the fundamental genetic programs undifferentiated stem cells both red and white cells that make up human blood.

Igor Slukvin, the principal investigator at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who developed the method, along with his group, explained that this was the first demonstration of production different cell types from human pluripotent stem cells, using transcription factors. Slukvin said over-expression of only two transcription factors, could reproduce the sequence events seen in the ’embryo’, where the blood was, in the Petri dish. The method developed by the group showed Slukvin blood cells produce in abundance. Per million stem cells, researchers were able to produce 30 million blood cells. According to Slukvin an unfulfilled aspiration is to produce hematopoietic stem cells, multipotent stem cells found in the bone marrow that are used to treat some cancers, such as leukemia and multiple myeloma, in the laboratory. What are stem cells?

Stem cells are cells that are capable of giving rise to more cells of the same type. They are of particular interest because they are able to replenish and dying cells can regenerate damaged tissue. Experts believe that stem cell treatments play an important role in relieving human diseases. At this time the therapy cost mother beneficial single cells is the bone marrow transplant, but experts believe it may be little used to treat cancer, diabetes, Parkinson’s, heart failure and may facilitate organ transplantation with a minimal risk of rejection and side effects.
