You may soon depend on text messages to help you kick the butt

The next time your phone blows, you could be reading a text message that inspires you to stub that cigarette butt. The USA. Food and Drug Administration plans to use graphic tags to help people quit smoking warning, but researchers at the Centers Miriam Hospital for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine suggest another strategy: text messages. The team found that smokers who received an intervention text messages were more likely to abstain from smoking in relation to controls. “The consumption of snuff is one of the world preventable health problems, and text messages has the promise to reach a wider audience with minimal cost and fewer resources,” said lead researcher Lori Scott-Sheldon. Text messages (short message service, SMS) provide interventions health education, reminders and support through short written messages. SMS interventions can be adapted to meet the health needs of an individual in their natural environment. Messages of support can be as simple as “You can do it!” Or “Be strong.” The use of meta-analysis, a statistical technique for combining the results of independent studies, researchers conducted the most extensive systematic review of the literature to date. This included 20 manuscripts with text messaging interventions for smoking cessation 22 of 10 countries. ‘The evidence provides unequivocal support for the effectiveness of interventions text messaging to reduce smoking, but more research is needed to understand they work for, under what conditions and why, “Scott-Sheldon said.
