This is the third post in a series on the effect of soy on hair growth. So far, we have seen that soy protein reduces DHT in men, and soy isoflavones reduce DHT, but increase testosterone in mice. The document we see today suggests that a combination of isoflavones and capsaicin grow hair in mice and humans ( link ). Mice received by injecting capsaicin and isoflavones through their diet, while human participants took both orally and supplements.
For the mouse study, the mice were divided into three groups: one received capsaicin alone, the second capsaicin and isoflavones received and the third was a control group. Although the entire document does not explicitly state soy isoflavones anywhere and only speaks of isoflavones in general, the product “Fujiflavone P40” are used in the diet is extracted from soya beans, so we can assume that the results apply soy isoflavones.
The study included 48 human volunteers, 25 men and 23 women. 34 suffering from androgenetic alopecia (AGA), 13 alopecia totalis (AT), and one of alopecia areata (AA). Capsaicin and IGF-1
factor insulin-like 1 (IGF-1) growth is involved in promoting hair growth in humans and animals. Indeed, mice that have been genetically modified to overexpress IGF-1 develop hair follicles before the controls, and humans with a deficiency of IGF-1 have sparse hair growth. One explanation is that the IGF-1 produced by cells of the dermal papilla could promote hair growth by stimulating keratinocyte proliferation in hair follicles.
When the mice in this study capsaicin, their dermal levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) were administered was significantly increased. Moreover, the knock-out mice show no increase CGRP IGF-1. The authors suggest that increased CGRP, or related gene peptide calcitonin, leads to increased production of IGF-1, which in turn leads to hair growth.
In mice, the combination of capsaicin and isoflavone increased IGF-1 rather than capsaicin alone. This makes sense because it increases the production of isoflavone CGRP. In humans, levels of IGF-1 increased after 5 months in participants who received capsaicin and isoflavone orally, while not increased in those receiving placebo.
Capsaicin, isoflavones and hair growth
After four weeks of treatment, rats received either capsaicin or capsaicin and isoflavone had grown more hair then control rats. Consistent with the observed increase in IGF-1, the combination of isoflavone and capsaicin was more effective than capsaicin alone.

After five months, hair growth was significantly increased in 64.5% of human volunteers who were administered capsaicin and isoflavone, compared with 11.8% in the placebo group. Moreover, 88% of participants who suffer from androgenic alopecia saw a promotion of hair growth when given capsaicin and isoflavone. A combination of soy isoflavones and capsaicin dermal increases IGF-1 levels and promotes hair growth in humans and mice. While some in vitro studies have suggested IGF-1 to be damaging to hair growth, this study shows that the result may be different in vivo.
The amounts used in the study are quite reasonable. Chile, cayenne pepper and red pepper contains between 0.1 mg to 60 mg per gram of capsaicin ( link link link ). Given that a tablespoon of ground spice weighs about 8 grams, a tablespoon of red pepper contain anywhere between 0.8 mg and 480 mg of capsaicin. The hotter the pepper is, the more capsaicin it contains.
Regarding soy, isoflavones are source of soybeans, containing about 200 mg of isoflavones per 100 grams ( link ). Tofu contains ~ 35 mg per 100g, while soymilk contains only ~ 9 mg. Therefore, to obtain 75 mg used in the study, you either have to eat about 40 grams of soya beans (dry weight), a little more than 200 grams of tofu, or a little less than a liter of soymilk.
