Thousands demand the legalization of cannabis in S.Africa ;

Thousands of South Africans took to the streets of Cape Town on Saturday demanding a relaxation of drug laws to allow for medicinal and recreational use of cannabis.

About 3,000 demonstrators participated in the march, some smoking cannabis , also known as marijuana and other banners or cannabis plants growing in containers portable.

“We were marching for legalization and regulation of cannabis in South Africa,” chief organizer Johannes Berkhout AFP.

“There is more than enough evidence worldwide about the medicinal benefits of cannabis,” he said, adding that legalization would create a “safer and more controllable” drug use.

The use of cannabis and medical marijuana is gaining popularity in some parts of the world to alleviate suffering from cancer, glaucoma, HIV and AIDS, and other serious illnesses.

But opponents fear that the crime connected to drug abuse and users of graduate to harder drugs

A South African opposition lawmaker Mario Oriani-Ambrosini in 2014 introduced a bill calling for the legalization of marijuana, but died shortly afterwards.
