Scientists say they have a better understanding of why people with the fight Alzheimer’s recognize and understand words – and his research has the potential to develop into a test that could help doctors make an early diagnosis

complaints word

in the early stages, the two most common complaints of people with Alzheimer’s disease are difficulty remembering events and understand and produce words.

Academics from the Universities of York and Oviedo, Spain, wanted to see if a patient’s ability to recognize words affected in the early stages of the disease, and if it is, what properties words that are easier or more difficult for a patient to recognize.

research, which took place in northern Spain with colleagues at the hospital Cabueñes in Gijon, was published in Journal of Neuropsychology .

Word Diagnosis

A test of word recognition based on the findings could contribute to the diagnosis, Professor Andrew Ellis, the Department of Psychology at York, he said

added .. ” the greatest potential impact on the diagnosis could be a useful addition to the arsenal of the doctors who try to make the diagnosis addition.

“Alzheimer’s is not easy to diagnose in the early stages. There are other forms of dementia are relatively common and can be difficult to distinguish between them in the early stages. A test of word recognition on the basis of these findings may contribute to the diagnosis , but it would have to do more work. “

actual words against invented words

As part of the study, participants were shown actual words on a computer screen mixed with invented words. in each trial of the experiment, there was a real word on the screen and three non-words. the task of the participant was simply to draw the actual word on the screen.

the researchers chose the task mainly because it evaluates if the words are familiar or not, and does not require patients to explain the meanings of words, something to fight to do it.

conducted the study in Spanish, but an example in English should be noted the word EAGLE when it appears on the screen with SLINT, OMPUL and CROOM. The researchers chose the words expected that healthy seniors who are able to recognize.

Forty people with mild or moderate symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease aged 66-91 years participated in the study, and 25 healthy controls matched to patients for age, gender and years of education. Healthy controls the actual words chosen with little difficulty, from which scientists infer that patients have also known these words before the onset of dementia.

By contrast, the patients with Alzheimer’s disease lost about one in five of the actual words. When the researchers analyzed the properties of the words asked easier or more difficult for patients to recognize, they found that:

  1. Common words: Patients recognize words common better than less common words
  2. abstract words: patients understand words better than words with abstract meanings
  3. specific meanings

  4. wORDS Childhood :. Patients captured words learned early better than words learned in childhood or adulthood later life
  5. Long words: The length of the words did not affect the activity .

ability to use words

professor Ellis added: “a lot of work has been done with Alzheimer’s patients by the task of naming images of objects

. ” In this study we wanted to find his place if their ability to recognize words affected in the early stages of the disease. If word recognition is disturbed, wanted to know what properties of words that are easier or more difficult for Alzheimer’s patients to recognize.

“We speculate that the responsible for the problems in word recognition and production that we and other researchers have identified, damage resulting mainly from the loss of cells in an area at the front left temporal lobe that is crucially involved in the processing of the meanings of the concepts and words.
