Parents: Encourage your children to stay away from alcohol ;

Drinking alcohol is a major problem for adolescent health, and this is particularly true because of their underdeveloped brains. The brains of teenagers are still growing and changing. The regular presence of alcohol in the blood could affect anyone. However, due to its continued growth during adolescence, teens are at higher risk health problems related to alcohol .

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), more than 9 million children and adolescents (between the ages of 12 and 20) reported who drank alcohol in the previous month. This group represents approximately 25% of all under age 20 years in the United States.

Usually, adolescents and young adults do not take as often as adults, but drinking more than one sitting. For example, adolescents and young adults tend to drink excessively, have as many as five or more drinks on one occasion. However, the good news is that National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) indicates that there was a drop in the number of young people who were binge drinking between 2002 and 2012. However, the number of teens who continue to drink excessively remains high – nearly 6 million young people between the ages of 12 and 20 reported drinking heavily and 1.7 million youth reported drinking heavily

reports also indicate that those who are currently taking and who are minors, 80% of them drink in a group, 5.5% of them drink alone, and 14.5 % of them drink while in the presence of another person.

Moreover, the drink is so well accepted in society that is hard to put a limit against something young people to be found in almost any social gathering attending outside school. Although parents can not strictly enforce drinking with your child, he or she could do it anyway, because such easy access to it.

However, you can encourage your child to stay away from alcohol by thinking through an evening together and make a plan to stay sober. The following could be an example of a plan that you and your child has:

  1. Go early in the evening when most people are still somewhat sober, and leave early before the night too carried away.
  2. Take only enough money with you to come and go home. If you are riding with your friends, then get out with as little money as you feel comfortable. This will keep you from spending money on drinks when tempted.
  3. If you choose to participate in the ritual of asking for something in the bar, a non-alcoholic drink is achieved. You can stay cool with a drink in hand, but does not have to handle the hangover in the morning.
  4. Ask your friends to keep an eye on you for the appeal of the drink will not tempt you. From a distance, it looks funny, but you know you’ll regret later.
  5. Keep communication with parents. Tell them where you are going and when you are back. This will also be a way of being accountable to a non-drinking life style.
