You’ve probably heard before and laughed, thinking that the person saying it must be terribly misinformed or even downright crazy: the grains are bad for you. The idea that the grains could not be the epitome of health seems a nonsense, since it goes against official recommendations set by the government and medical-issued. Recommendations have been hearing all their lives, that have been handed to you on television, in magazines mainstream health, and of course in supermarkets and health stores.
In view of all that the popular consensus on the health benefits of grains, how could they be bad for you ? Especially if they are whole grains? – That’s what all health gurus say you should eat for a life style nutritious and well balanced, right
wrong. It seems we’ve been fed myths about health beans all our lives, and it is time to dissolve these myths so you can see why food grains could not be doing that much good as was once thought.
Myth: Grains are an essential source of fiber
turns out that the fiber is not purely benign substance we thought it was. A recent study has found that foods rich in fiber rub against the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, breakdown of the outer covering of the intestinal wall and increase the level of lubricating mucus. Scientists interpret this rather unpleasant as being a good thing description. However, the breakdown of your intestinal walls can only mean bad news for your gut. It weakens the intestine and allows toxins and proteins potentially hazardous foods that pass through the bloodstream and wreak havoc with your immune system.
Moreover, the alleged production of “lubricating mucus” due to abrasion of the intestines is strikingly similar to that reported in syndrome irritable bowel , where victims often complain strange mucus in her stern.
The point is that while the grains may be associated with an essential source of fiber, it is clear that eating large amounts of foods rich in fiber, such as those made with grains, can actually damage your digestive tract and cause a number of other harmful effects on the body. Fruits and vegetables contain more than enough fiber so it can be healthy and maintain regular bowel activity.
Myth: Grains are the building block much of the food pyramid
If you are familiar with some of our other articles on healthy fats and eat more ancestral diet, what you’ve started to wonder if food pyramid , which she got into our faces as children and every time we walked into the office of a nutritionist, is really so great. Well, the food pyramid shows grain as being the foundation of a healthy Western diet, consuming recommended amounts almost unlimited daily whole grains. This should also convince the food pyramid approved by the government is way off the mark, as the grains should not really appear in the pyramid at all.
All grains contain anti-nutrients – compounds that prevent an animal from the digestion of seeds inside the grain. These include gluten, lectins and phytates. Gluten, which is found in wheat, rye and barley, can lead to a wide range of autoimmune diseases, calcium engage and vitamin D3 levels in the body, messing with the thyroid gland, and cause severe bone defects. Lectins bind to the intestinal wall of humans and cause leptin resistance, which can result in diabetes and obesity. Phytates prevent the absorption of nutrients and minerals from food, so deficient in a range of compounds necessary for proper operation.
Why are grains of paramount importance in the food pyramid? Looking back to the years after the agricultural revolution in about 10,000 BC, grains became increasingly important currency – a currency that governs who was rich and who was poor. Those who had the land and could grow and store grains could control access of the population to the main source of food, and therefore were more powerful.
What happens is that things are exactly the same today. In the US, the Department of Agriculture has been and continues to be strongly linked to agribusiness grain-centric, pressure groups that are even more powerful than the pharmaceutical industry. As a result, the government issued heavy subsidies to anyone growing wheat, corn or other grains, at the expense of public health.
Myth: Grains are an essential source of vitamins and nutrients
often told us that whole grains are a important source of vitamins and minerals. These claims are unfounded for a number of reasons. First, grain varieties today are completely different from the original, ancestral counterparts. The grains we see on our plates today have grown, selected and modified based on their ability to produce higher yields and last longer on the shelves. therefore higher rates growth and the densest crops have become more important than the nutrient availability, and the result is today grains that are very deficient in vitamins and nutrients.
To make matters worse, anti-nutrients discussed above prevent the absorption of nutrients. The smallness nutrients could receive grains are almost never absorbed by the body due to the action of phytates, which bind to the vitamins and minerals and prevent its absorption by the body. Therefore, when grain consumption, clean nutrients pass through our digestive system and out the other side without having to nourish our bodies.
