Increased risk of asthma with HRT

Nov 5, 2016 | | Say something

Research in France and Denmark has shown HRT could significantly increase the chances of having asthma attacks severe enough to put them in the hospital of the woman.

you may think that asthma has nothing to do with your hormones, but it would be a mistake. The severity of asthma attacks varies throughout the menstrual cycle and during pregnancy, but the incidence tends, in general, to fall after menopause. But Danish scientists agree.

HRT increases risk over time

Unlike some recent research that claimed HRT benefits in a trial of only 6 pairs of twins, this study has looked at a large group of women. Researchers at the Danish Pediatric Asthma Center and Danish Cancer Society analyzed the records of more than 23,000 women, noting if prescribed HRT and for how long, and if I ever had needed hospital treatment for an asthma attack.

What they found was a surprise as it was clear that the woman was on HRT, the greater the risk:

  • 29% more likely to go to hospital if HRT for up to three years
  • 34% increased risk for those taking for more than three years
  • 50% more likely to need treatment if there for more than ten years

“the drugs can not only trigger asthma in those who have never suffered condition, but also make your symptoms much worse. ”

They are so concerned about the results that have been ordered doctors to stop prescribing the treatment to any patient complaining of respiratory problems. It was reported the possibility of a link between HRT and asthma also last year when a 12-year study of more than 58,000 women in France found that those who received estrogen only replacement therapy were 54 percent more likely to develop the illness.

However, the latest study is the first time that HRT has been shown to put patients at risk for a severe attack requiring hospital treatment. Dr. Klaus B√łnnelykke of CAPD said “Previous research has suggested a link between asthma and female sex hormones, especially HRT. Our findings extend this to severe exacerbations of asthma. If a patient develops asthma or has a severe worsening of symptoms after taking HRT, you may have to stop hormone therapy altogether. “

It’s time to go?

health problems associated with hormone replacement therapy are well known and include increased risk of cancer and heart disease, and this is why a growing number of women switch to a more natural way of hormone replacement therapy with bioidentical hormones. HRT use has dropped dramatically from 6.1 million in 2001 to about 2.6 million women in Britain today are given HRT.

the benefits of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy are not as well known, but certainly appreciate the many women who have changed us the use of natural progesterone and estrogen in a combined natural formula to help with the symptoms of menopause.

Menopause can not be prevented, but the symptoms of hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and depression can certainly be helped without risking synthetic hormones found in hormone replacement therapy.
