Ahead of a ban Formal on “desi” or home made liquor in Bihar, Nitish Kumar Chief Minister on Thursday launched a campaign to encourage people to abstain from alcohol. Nitish Kumar reiterated that he was committed to the implementation of a total ban on liquor in the state on April 1, but would be done in phases. Bihar would prohibit first country-made liquor and then India made foreign liquor (IMFL) he said. The campaign launched by the Chief Minister involve women and children in creating awareness about the harmful effects of alcohol consumption, and helping people to stay away from alcohol voluntarily. “Women will be the main link in the campaign against liquor,” said an official. Seven government departments, with mass education department working as the coordinating body, would take the message against drinking liquor millions of families through 8,444 panchayats in 37 districts, he said. Prohibition of alcohol was one of the promises Nitish Kumar made during the campaign for the assembly elections in Bihar 2015. Previously, the Minister of Excise and prohibition Mastan Abdul Jalil had said the government would ban liquor ‘desi’ of April 1, 2016, and ‘videshi’ (IMFL)) from September 2016. consumption liquor among the poor was destroying families and damaging the prospects of living children, Mastan said.
