If you have bad luck dealing with a cold, cough, nausea or other common ailments, there are foods that can help you get better sooner. Here are four food health remedies that have scientifically proven to remedy the disease, according to leading dietitians and researchers:

Chicken soup for colds: ♦ It has been shown that homemade chicken soup inhibits the activity of inflammation that causes white blood cells and increases the speed of nasal secretions.

Cough honey: ♦ Honey has been shown to outperform the popular cough suppressant dextromethorphan in the treatment of cough symptoms in children.

Prunes for regularity: ♦ Eating eight to 10 prunes per day can increase stool weight and bowel movement frequency in people with constipation and without constipation.

Ginger ale for nausea: ♦ It is recommended to drink ginger ale to help prevent or treat nausea and vomiting and can be used as a digestive aid for mild stomach upset.

Peach Sauce


3 ripe peaches

1/4 cup chopped red onion

1/4 cup diced green pepper

1 jalapeno, chopped

1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro

1/2 lime juice

Salt and pepper


Fill a medium pot with water and boil. Place the peaches in the boiling water for 1-2 minutes. Remove the peaches with a slotted spoon and immediately place them in an ice bath (a container full of equal amounts of water and ice). An ice bath will allow peaches to cool while stopping the cooking process. Gently peel the peaches with your hands or with a small kitchen knife. Cut the peaches into small dice.

Combine chopped peaches, onion, pepper, jalapeno, cilantro and lime juice in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper and stir to combine. Chill the sauce for about an hour before serving for the flavors to marry. If your craving for peach sauce demands immediate attention, however, feel free to serve this sauce with tortilla chips or pita bread immediately.
