Could certain jobs protect your memory?

If you have a mentally taxing work , which could protect your memory in old age.

This is according to new research from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, which could have shed some light on why people develop dementia.

More than 1,000 people over 70 years in Scotland were studied for this experiment and knew that those with more complex work – such as lawyers, graphic designers and teachers – scored better on memory tests than those with lesser roles, such as carpet layers and factory workers.

The research – published in the journal Neurology – seemed to suggest that any role that individuals treated with the data or people were more demanding.

The study leader Dr. Alan Gow said: “Our findings have helped identify the types of job applications that preserve the memory and thinking later.”

head of research at Alzheimer’s Research UK Dr Simon Ridley said that while it was important to keep the brain active, this study showed that there was a “small and subtle association” between one’s work and of their cognitive functioning in adulthood – didn ‘t show that there was a direct link.
