pediatrician and professor at the Faculty of Medicine University of St. Louis Stuart Slavin, they discovered some alarming statistics when looking at rates of anxiety and depression among adolescent students. After testing 2,100 students in high school Irvington in Fremont, California using both the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale Inventory and State-Trait Anxiety found that:

  • 80 percent students showed symptoms of moderate to severe anxiety
  • 54 percent of students showed symptoms of moderate to severe depression

Dr. Slavin said, “This is what goes beyond what is normally seen in an adolescent population.” The survey reveals only a small part of the issue nationwide school-related stress. Due to unrealistic expectations about education, children and adolescents are experiencing negative health effects. According to the American Psychological Association, nearly one in three teenagers are driven to sadness or depression because of the stress of school. Sleep deprivation, migraines and psychological problems are just some of the negative effects that modern education creates.
