Symptoms of depression are no more likely in transgender young children who have family support in nontransgender children, according to researchers at the University of Washington. transgender children may experience only marginally elevated levels of anxiety.

These findings are based out of a study involving 73 children between the ages of 3 and 11 who identified as transgender. Parents reported symptoms of anxiety and depression in children. Symptoms of depression were no greater than those of the average population, while anxiety symptoms were slightly above average, but still remained below the preclinical or clinical thresholds. Ilana Sherer, MD, of the Medical Foundation Palo Alto explained: “This finding is crucial for professionals who work with these children importance as well as their families, which shows that they are not likely to suffer any further damage and may benefit from early social transition. “
